|
This is a decent chippy.
Nazma
Nazma always produces the goods... I went in on the recent rainy Bank Holiday Weekend. My staple indian dish, Chicken Balti, was great and the mixed starter was excellent. You can't go far wrong here.
Malborough Arms
A decent 'sports pub'. A pub for Sunday afternoons to watch Norwich FC play away to Burnley, badly. Quite smokey, but the bar staff are on the ball.
Hog in Armour
The Hog has been done out as a trendy wine bar - you know, laminated floor and high tables - and it attracts a prententious crowd at the weekends. The bar staff are good, but overall the place has little atmosphere. OK Sunday roast though.
Pinocchio's
I have been to Pinocchio's several times. And on each occaision I've really enjoyed the food. The wild boar was great.
Wildman
The Wildman is a classic tale of the sum being greater than the value of its parts. At first sight the pub looks like a bit of a dive frequented by drainpiped-jean wearing Warhol wannbes. This maybe true, but the pub somehow works. Centrally located, with a decent jukebox, the Wildman has the least pretentious atmosphere of any pub in the city centre, probably. In all the times I've been there, there has not been the slightest inkling of aggression.
Torreros
This is a cracking spanish restaurant. Easily the best tapas in the city. Go, you won't be disappointed.
Spice Lounge
Swish lobby, good service but shame about the prices and food. The Spice Lounge makes a point that it cooks its spices whole (ie, not chopped up) quite why they advertise this fact is beyond me. It also means that most dishes are on the whole too mild, until you bite into a chilli. Strange. Also, to recoup the obvious large investment they've put into the place thier dishes are generaly about ?1.50 higher than anywhere else - while this is still very reasonable, I think there's better Indians for your money.
Sweet Chilli
Good food, in tight but fairly comfortable surroundings. Slightly on the pricey side though.
Golden Star
A decent boozer. Slightly ramshackled but with a quaint charm. A good off-the-wall quiz on Sundays at 8.
Natasha Reed Salon
A top notch salon, with great friendly and professional staff. Excellent.
Blueberry
The quality of music blows hot and cold, but at least the Blueberry puts live music top of its agenda.
Prince of India
Went in here after a drunken night out on Tuesday, they were shutting but they let us in as we were a large party of ten. I wasn't expecting much but the food was much better than I thought; I had a chicken muytna (I think that's how you spell it) which was mushroom based. Not the best there is and slightly more expensive than those down Magdalen Street. Worth a look nonetheless.
Auberge
Auberge in Norwich's Castle Mall suffers from a bit of an identity crisis - it is part relaxed bar and part quite-formal restaurant. I went in the restaurant half on a Sunday afternoon and it was quiet. They serve four differently prepared variaties locally sourced fresh mussels - something of a signature dish - so I plumped for Provencal mussels for £12.95, (mussels boiled with basil, tomato, garlic and onion). There were lots of them and they tasted good, but mirroring the place they were incongruously served with a portion of french fries. My girlfriend had a club sandwich for about £8, which was good if nothing special. Overall the service was ok and the food was good if a little overpriced.
Ali Tandoori
This was a surprise and just goes to show the quality of Indian restaurants in Norwich. Went in on Friday, it was packed and with good reason. I had a chicken Bangalore - which was a bit beyond my spicy comfort zone. The bill only came to £13 a head which is great considering we had poppadums, a main, with nan and rice. Staff were great (my other half left her handbag in the reception area (typical) which was duly handed to her with a smile).
Ha! Ha!
I went for a meal in Ha-Ha's with my other half and I was pleasantly surprised. I had the moroccan lamb with cous cous, which was really good - nutty couscous, spiced tender lamb with sour dressing. The other half had haddock and salmon cakes which she enjoyed. With spicy onion rings and chips came to about £25.
Sukhothai
Sukhothai is simply the best thai restaurant in Norwich and is something of a hidden gem. It's based in Wroxham, so it's a few miles out of Norwich, but it's well worth the visit. Great thai food and excellent service. I heartily reccomend the king prawn curry and duck pancakes. I also liked the fact they served all of the well known thai beers. Nice touch.
Zizzi
I went into Zizzi's into Norwich fearing the worst - another chain restaurant in Norwich which had taken over the establishment of Pizza One. But I was pleasantly surprised. I had chicken wrapped with parma ham and stuffed with mozzarella on field mushroom risotto. Came in at about £9.
